The Metropolis

Newington is the Capital City of the Server. It is the largest city, and it has the seats of government that keep the city and its colonies running smoothly - most of the time. The year in Newington is 1881, and the date corresponds with the actual date. For example, if the real date is May 4th, 2016, then the in-game date is May 4th, 1881. Newington and its colonies (Expect Porton and Wellington) are set in 1881 because that year is reflective of the British Imperial Century (ca. 1815-1914).

Although Newington's Empire is modeled after the real-life British Empire, Newington is not a British City nor is it American. It is its own fictional city in a fictional world that draws on real-life aspects to make it as realistic as possible. The following is a brief history of Newington to help players create their own personas and family histories.

Ca. 450 BC. Nomads, possibly from the outskirts of the Roman Empire, first settle on the Gwyr River near the current Capital Building. Few artifacts have been preserved from this era since major construction work was done in the late Middle Ages destroying many ancient foundations.

Ca. 45 AD. Unknown author writes Canis Est in Via and Ubi Est Metella, ancient epic poems detailing the daily lives of several Roman citizens living in the village that would later become Newington. This text is preserved in the Library of Newington, and academic scholars are in the process of translating the ancient Latin to contemporary English.

554 AD. Celtic invaders sack the city, burning it to the ground. They found their own city, Newston, on the siteunder the rule of Alfred the Elder. The City soon establishes itself as a major trading city en route to other towns. Newston's harbors make it a wealthy port city.

780 AD. The oldest still-standing building in modern Newington is constructed. The monastery on present-day Frontage Street near the docks becomes a landmark for weary sailors coming into port. The church serves as the major power in the city, even more so than the council of elders.

1345 AD. The Castle of Newington is constructed, and the first evidence of the city's name changing from Newston to Newington is preserved in the corner stone of the castle. The castle was financed by the Newington family, whose last name is a derivation of Newston.

1478 AD. Nordic tribesmen invade Newington, burning the majority of the wooden buildings to the ground and severely damaging the monastery. The Newington militia under the command of Norman Newington, whose ancestors built the castle of Newington, fend off the invaders victoriously.

1559 AD. The nearby community of Farmington falls under the jurisdiction of Lord Newington XVII amidst great controversy.

1560 AD. The center building for the current Capital Building is constructed without the Lapis dome.

1625 AD. The Great Awakening in Newington. A revival of religious fervor hits the city. St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Protestant church on Anchor Alley are constructed and draw large congregations.

1660 AD. In celebration of the centennial of the construction of the Capital Building, the citizens of Newington and the Newington family finance the iconic Lapis dome to crown the building.

1687 AD. The Newington Witch Tryals. Fear grips the city after a band of haggard women practice strange rituals outside the city. Citizens claim that the women were part of a coven that were putting a curse on the Newington family. 13 women, 4 men, and 5 children are tried as witches and all are found guilty and hanged in current-day Spruce Park. (In 1879, the Ladies Benevolent Society of Newington erected a memorial to those lost, and President James released a formal apology for the witch trials to the descendants of those affected).

1743 AD. Civil War erupts between the citizens of Newington and the incorporated town of Farmington. The citizens of the small farming community demand to be recognized as their own town. The executives in Newington refuse to give in to their demands, leading to open conflict in the city for three years which damaged many buildings and also the shipping industry in Newington. Nearly 40,000 lose their lives before Newington grants Farmington its freedom in 1746.

1781 AD. Newington furthers its Imperialistic Endeavors by establishing bases in Osiris, and several South American cities. The Imperial Senate is created in order to run the growing empire. The wings to the Capital Building are added.

1802 AD. The First Reform Act. All land-owning men over the age of 21 are able to vote in elections.

1821 AD. Protestors demand that voting rights be extended to all men over 18. After the Imperial Senate denied these demands, demonstrators stormed the Capital Building and set it on fire. The fire was extinguished quickly, but the Senate agreed to make The Second Reform Act allowing all men over 18 to vote to quell unrest in the city.

1863 AD. The Health and Living Standards Act. The Health and Living Standards Administration is created to combat the deplorable conditions faced by the indigent in Newington. Their efforts are on-going.

1880 AD. President James is elected into office for his first six-year term.
